578 tuberculosis cases recorded in Kano -Official

The Infectious Diseases Hospital, Kano State, on Wednesday, said it recorded a total of 578 cases of tuberculosis between January and December 2013.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Mohammed Abdullahi, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano.

Abdullahi said most of the patients were admitted in the hospital for over three months, while others were outpatients.

He added that the hospital attended to 98 patients with tuberculosis between January and February this year, pointing out that 23 were out patients, while 75 were admitted.

He noted that the establishment of the over 1,000 Direct Observe Treatment centres across the state had greatly reduced the number of patients receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said, “The establishment of the DOT centres also assisted in reducing the spread of the disease, as new cases are promptly treated at the centres.”

According to him, the treatment centres have also reduced the concentration of patients at the IDH.

He advised patients to adhere strictly with the rules and regulations guiding their medication.
