Banditry: Nigerian security chiefs storm Niger

Adeniyi Olugbemi, Sokoto

A joint security team from  the 8 Division Nigerian Army, Sokoto,  has visited  Niger Republic  to discuss  ways to end transnational crimes.

Acting Director Army Public Relations, by Col. Sagir Musa,  said  in a statement on Friday the team was led by  the Commander, 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General L.K.N. Udeagbala,  who represented the GOC,  8 Division.

Others in the team  were  the  Commander,  8 Division Garrison,  Brig Gen,  IOO Olotta; Commander,  8 Military Intelligence Brigade, Brig  Gen,  J. Maina;  and  Commanding Officer, 26 Battalion, Lt Col,  IB Sheriff.

The rest were the Commissioner of Police Sokoto State, I. Kaoje; Director, Department of State Services, Sokoto State Mr Ibrahim Salama;  and Comptroller of  Nigeria Customs Service,  Mr B.U. Gimba.

Mr E.S. Fagbamigbe  represented the Nigeria Immigration Service while  Mr U.M. Bala represented the Nigeria Security and Civil Security and Defence Corps.

According to Musa,  the Nigerians and their Nigerien counterparts brainstorm on  the  security challenges in Sokoto State and its environs.

Sokoto is one of the states where  kidnappers and  bandits have wreaked havoc in recent times.

Musa  recalled that the  security threats along the  boundary of both countries led to  the establishment of a joint military border patrol in September 2018.

He said, “The main objective of the joint security venture was to checkmate the menace of cross-border  banditry and other criminalities across the nations’ common borders.”

The  Nigerien  team comprised  the Commanding Officer Special Intervention Command, Lt Col Saminou Mani,  Lt Col Siddo Seyni and others.

The statement said the  Nigerian team used the opportunity of the meeting to visit refugees at Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Dankano.
