Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Saturday chaired the closing ceremony of the 28th National Quranic Recitation programme in Jigawa State, reiterating that the Holy Quran is about a message of peace and development.

The Governor who spoke at the event organized by the Centre for Islamic Studies, Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto and hosted by the Jigawa State Government at the Aminu Kano Triangle, Dutse, explained that the Holy Book contains so many revelations, guides about life, about cleanliness, gender, how women should be treated, protected and cared for.

According to Governor Fashola, the essence of the Quranic competition is the development of young people by exposing them to independent knowledge and understanding of what the Quran contains.

He said though some have misunderstood or misrepresented the purpose of the divine message, it is clear to him and all those who have read it that it is a message of peace that teaches about how children should be treated, nurtured and developed.

Governor Fashola also noted that the Holy Quran teaches about how leaders should govern with the fear of God and putting the interest of their subjects in the forefront in their decision making processes.

Commending Governor Sule Lamido for hosting the competition and demonstrating that every state with the right leadership and with the right focus and commitment to the cause of the people will survive with or without oil, Fashola expressed his delight at being invited to chair the event at which Lagos State is also a participant.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Aminu Tambuwal said the significance of the event must be borne in mind by everyone to the effect that the younger ones must be taught the correct recitation of the Holy Quran always.

According to the Speaker, it is from the correct readings of the Holy Quran that one can get the correct meaning and interpretations of the Holy Book, which ultimately results in an understanding of the Quran’s correct message.

Also speaking at the event, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar who was the royal father of the day, thanked the good people and government of Jigawa State for hosting the programme for the second time in four years, expressing the belief that the 2014 edition was better than the 2011 edition which is an indication of the commitment of the leadership of the state.

He commended the Governor for his efforts in seeing to the welfare of the people and promotion of Islam not only in Jigawa State but throughout the length and breadth of the country.

The winner of the Quran Recitation Competition, Mr Sulaiman Salis Idris from Kaduna State was turbanned at the event which attracted several bigwigs including the Governor of Niger State, Dr Muazu Aliyu Babangida, Adamawa State, Vice Admiral Murtala Nyako, Kaduna State, Mallam Mukthar Ramalan Yero and others.
