A member representing Ajingi state constituency in Kano State, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Garba Gafasa, has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The election followed his nomination by the member representing Dala state constituency, Malam Lawan Hussain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday during the first plenary session of the 9th Assembly.
Our correspondent reports that the nomination was seconded by the member representing Doguwa state constituency, Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim-Riruwai.
Gafasa also served as Speaker during the Malam Ibrahim-Shekarau’s second term as the governor of the state. Also elected was the member representing Makoda state constituency, Hamisu Cidari as the Deputy Speaker for the fourth time.
The legislators elected the member representing Warawa state constituency, Alhaji Ayuba Labaran-Madari as the Majority Leader.
Also, a member representing Gezawa Constituency, Alhaji Ali Danja was elected as the minority leader, with Alhaji Garba Shehu, representing Kibiya Constituency, as the Deputy Majority Leader.
The Assembly also elected Alhaji Ayuba Labaran-Durum, representing Kabo constituency as the Chief Whip, while member representing Kura Garun-Malam, Alhaji Hayatu Dorawa-Sallau as the Majority Whip.
In his acceptance speech after taking oath of office, the new speaker commended the legislators for giving him the mandate to lead the assembly as speaker for the second time.
He assured that he would carry all members along irrespective of party differences and pledged to ensure that laws that have direct benefits to the general public are enacted.
The speaker said that the 9th Assembly would do everything possible to ensure more developmental projects in the state.
