I will revisit Kaduna’s rejected $350m loan request – Sani

Sunday Aborisade, Abuja

The senator-elect for Kaduna Central, Uba Sani, has promised to ensure the approval of the Kaduna State’s $350m loan request which the Senate rejected in March 2018.

Sani, an All Progressives Congress member who defeated the incumbent Senator Shehu Sani of the Peoples Redemption Party in the last general elections, said the World Bank loan was critical to the people of his state.

The senator-elect, who stated this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja, accused the three senators currently representing the state of playing politics by opposing the loan.

He said, “The $350m loan requested by the Kaduna State Government from the World Bank was not about Governor Nasir El-Rufai or any other person, it is about the people of Kaduna State.

“We seek the loan primarily to support our education sector, to improve our health care system, solve the unemployment problems of our teeming youths and to improve our infrastructure.

“The World Bank looked at the request and approved the loan. Unfortunately, the current senators in the Eighth Senate did not look at the issues critically, but decided to put their personal interest above the interest of the people they are representing.

“That was the reason they decided to reject the loan. For me, it is not about politics. We are not here to grandstand, but the interest of our people must be paramount.

“We must put politics aside and focus on the immediate need of our people. The first thing I will do in the Senate, in collaboration with my colleagues, is to pursue that loan and by the grace of God, we are going to get it.

“We will pursue it because the loan is about improving the lives of the nine million people of Kaduna State.”

The Senate had in March last year rejected the $350m Kaduna State Development Policy Operation Credit Facility for not meeting the minimum standards.

The rejection followed a recommendation by the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts headed by Sani.

In his report, Sani explained that Kaduna State was already indebted to the tune of $232m, noting that approval of the $350m would raise the debt profile of the state to $582m, a situation he posited would be unsustainable for the state.
