“How can the commission charge such amount of money knowing full well that the contestants are not businessmen?” he said.

The Labour Party, LP, in Kano State has expressed concern over what it described as `outrageous amount’ charged for nomination forms for the forthcoming local government election in the state.

The State Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC, had fixed N250,000 and N150,000 as fees for chairmanship and councillorship forms respectively.

Tasi’u Abdurrahman, LP Caretaker Committee Chairman, made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Monday.

He said that the amount being charged for the forms was `outrageous’ considering the fact that most of those wishing to contest for the election under the platform of the party were not rich.

“The commission should consider that not all the candidates can afford to purchase the form in view of the current economic situation in the country.

“How can the commission charge such amount of money knowing full well that the contestants are not businessmen?” he said.

He cautioned the commission against charging such huge amount of money in order not to promote corruption in the system.

Mr. Abdurrahman also called on stakeholders to prevail on the commission to reduce the amount in order to give the youths the opportunity to partake in politics.

“If reasonable amount is charged, more people especially the youth will have the opportunity to contest election in the state’’, he said.

The commission had on March 14 commenced the sales of forms to prospective candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions.

All completed forms are expected to be returned to the commission on or before April 4.
