Over N4m in prizes will be won at the first Katsina Golden star National Badminton Championship in Katsina State from November 8 to 11 and the National Badminton Championship in Lagos from November 15 to 18.

According to the president of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, the two competitions will feature five categories – men and women’s singles, doubles and the mixed doubles.

He said the first 16 winners in each category of the competitions would be rewarded.

“Our sponsorship drive has started to yield positive outcomes – we have Mutual Benefit Asurance Limited sponsoring the national championships in Lagos,” Orbih said.

“The prize money for each competition stands at N2,670,000. There will be prizes for the players from the Round of 16 in the men and women’s singles while there will be prizes from the quarterfinals of the doubles events. The prize money for the male and female categories is the same.

“As part of our commitment to having a comprehensive database of our players, players are required to register on the federation’s website for the two competitions.

“Our commitment has shown in the support we have received from the private sector in a few months of our administration. The support from the Katsina Golden Star Badminton club and Mutual Benefit Assurance are signs of better days ahead for the sport in Nigeria.”

He added, “This is the first national competition since the Lagos International Classics in July. For many years, we have not had national tournaments – and competitions are what players have been yearning for because it grows their forms and make them better. With competitions such as this, we will be able to rank our players effectively after the tournaments.”
