NGF Supports National Conference

| March 27, 2014

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), led by Gov. Jonah Jang of Plateau, on Thursday expressed confidence and support for the ongoing National Conference.

The forum declared this after its meeting in Abuja‎.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting, Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, said the governors had commended President Goodluck Jonathan for convening  the conference.

“We commend the president for the conference because we strongly believe that decisions made there will ultimately lead to the unity and oneness of our great country.

“And we call on all Nigerians to give it the needed support and encouragement,” he said.

Mimiko said the forum deliberated on the security situation in the country and condemned in strong terms the killings in Benue, Katsina, Kaduna and some of the North-Eastern states.

“We welcomed the newly-elected Governor of Anambra State, Mr Willy Obiano and congratulated the Chairman, Gov. Jonah Jang on his seventieth birthday,” Mimiko said.

On the security situation in the country, Gov. Godwill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom said: “It is good to dialogue and look at the challenges facing us as a nation and try to proffer solutions to ‎them.

“That is exactly what the NGF led by Gov. Jang is doing. This issue must not be left to the Federal Government alone; we all have a role to play.

“It is important that we try to highlight some of the challenges facing the nation today, we should all go to our states and gather intelligence information and pass it on to the appropriate quarters.

“Those we can work on and implement, we will go ahead and do so,” Akpabio said.

He called on all Nigerians to be security-conscious and work together to survive the ongoing insurgency.

Gov. Gabriel Suswan of Benue on his part, said: “The situation in B‎enue is very bad. We have briefed the president and the security agencies are working hard toward putting an end to the killings in the state.”

The NGF meeting was attended by the governors of Plateau, Akwa -Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kogi, Enugu, Ondo, Bauchi, the Acting Governor of Taraba and deputy governors of Sokoto, Katsina and Abia. (NAN)
